When it comes to “green” it seems to be the way to go these days. I am installing a solar panel that powers an exhaust fan. The building is part of a home that is in the ground, so much of the house is cooler due to it being underground.
The cupola you see in the picture rises above the kitchen and a natural area for the hot air to rise to. The kitchen and sitting area on the main level gets warm, but when the exhaust fan is working the cooler air is drawn up cooling the kitchen area.
The problem with the fan is it is only powered by solar so when the sun goes down, the fan doesn’t operate. We originally placed the solar panel on the edge of the house, but the sun wasn’t on after 5:30 PM and being in Arizona, it is still very hot out.
Relocating the solar panel to the roof and angling it slightly will allow the fan to operate longer in the evening hours until the air outside cools down more.
For a temporary mounting two pieces of 1 x 8 were glued to the roof tiles, then the solar panel was mounted. If it is determined to be the best place for the panel then a more permanent mounting will be done.
Solar is a smart way to go and I feel all new buildings, either residential or commercial should include solar power, especially in the areas where sunshine is plentiful. Heat your own water, and produce your own electricity for free.
